Resources for Researchers and Research Leaders

Welcome to my resources page – ebooks and short videos all listed below. Everything is free.

Whether you’re navigating your own research career or leading and developing others, you’ll find practical tools and resources here.  It exists because I believe researchers deserve better support and because the tools that make a real difference are often straightforward once someone shows you where to look.

I’m Dr Margaret Collins. I have over two decades of experience in research, a PhD in molecular genetics, former Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Virology and now a leadership developer and coach  working with researchers and research leaders across universities and research institutes worldwide.

Do sign up to my mailing list to hear my thoughts on leadership, research life and careers. I promise I won’t overwhelm your inbox.

I write for researchers and the people who develop them — practical insights on leadership, resilience and building a research career that’s sustainable as well as successful. You won’t hear from me unless I have something worth saying. When you do hear from me it will be grounded, practical and relevant to the realities of research life.

How to Network Effectively

In this video, we explore how networking can help researchers and professionals create opportunities, build collaborations and increase their visibility. Participants are encouraged to think strategically about their professional networks, identify gaps and opportunities and develop a more intentional approach to building relationships.

The full session combines practical networking strategies with communication skills. Participants learn how to talk about their work in ways that are clear and engaging, approach networking conversations with greater confidence and develop professional relationships that support their long-term career goals.

When Research Gets Hard: a resource for Supervisors

PhD supervisors are seeing a new pattern: strong students are withdrawing when research gets hard, when experiments fail or feedback lands badly.

In this short guide, I explore what is really happening beneath the surface — and give supervisors a practical repertoire of responses.
