If you want to develop your power to focus, as soon as you feel the temptation to move away choose to stay, choose another five – five more lines, five more paragraphs, five more goes, five more minutes.
It’s got to be perfect
So many times in my life I've been paralysed by trying to be perfect. A paper, a project and idea for an experiment, a grant application... I have nearly missed so many boats, burnt so much midnight oil, desperately pursuing perfection... and was it worth it? Rarely?...
Procrastination? Yes, I’ve been putting this off!
Procrastination – leaving until tomorrow that which I know should be done today – involves a voluntary delay that we know is not strictly necessary and will have negative consequences. It’s certainly not the same as re-prioritisation because more important things have arisen.
Burned-out or Bored-out?
I recognised I was exhausted.
I recognised I was exhausted. And in that moment I realised how burn-out can sneak up on you. And no, I am not burned-out, just reflecting on it. I knew how deeply I needed a break and in truth, a few nights good sleep is not going to change this. I am getting regular good quality sleep. I feel this in my bones and my Fitbit tells me so. But exhaustion is often the first sign of burnout.
